How did they get their name? They get their name from the adult's yellow eye and the yellow stripe of feathers around their head.
Where do they live? New Zealand and Antarctic Islands
How long do they live? Yellow-eyed penguins can live up to 24 years.
What is the height of this penguin? They are about 24 inches tall.
What is the weight of this penguin? They weigh 13 pounds. 
What do they look like? The distinguishing feature of the yellow-eyed penguin is its distinctive yellow eye and bright yellow stripe that runs through the eye and around the back of the head.
What do they eat? They eat a variety of fish including opal fish, silverside, sprat, aruhu and red cod. Arrow squid is also important in their diet.
Where do they nest and what are the nests like? Their nests are shallow bowls on the forest floor, lined with grasses & twigs.
What are the predators of this penguin? Yellow-eyed penguins can fall prey to seals and sharks at sea.
What are some interesting facts about this penguin? It is the rarest of all penguins due to the deforestation of the New Zealand coastline and the introduction of new predatory species to the island.  There are only an estimated 1,500 breeding pairs of yellow-eyed penguins.
