Sea Turtles at Vero Beach

During a trip to Vero Beach, I learned about Sea Turtles.  They are amazing creatures.  Every year from March to October, the females return to the place that they hatched from to lay eggs.  This generally occurs at night.  I was able to see an adult turtle returning to the sea.  However, I was not able to take pictures since you are not allowed to use flash at night since this would disturb the turtles nesting.  After about two months time, the hatchlings (baby turtles) begin to emerge from the nests.  I was fortunate enough to see some make the trip to the ocean after hatching.

Loggerhead Turtle, Caretta caretta

The loggerhead is one of the larger sea turtles.  It is a reddish brown color. Adult females nest regularly along the Southeast portions of the U.S.  The loggerheads nest April to September, peaking in June and July. The east coast of Florida and the area around Cape Canaveral has the largest loggerhead nesting population in the western hemisphere.
