Penguin Vocabulary!

rookery Group of nesting penguins (can be as large as 10,000 penguins)
colony All the rookeries in a common area form a 'colony'.
tobogganing Laying on their belly and pushing themselves along the ice with their flippers and feet.
molting New feathers push out and replace old ones
waddle A group of penguins on land
raft A group of penguins in the water
blubber Layer of fat under their skin
crèche

When they grow bigger and no longer need an adult at all time to keep them sheltered, the chicks group together in crèches (see picture above)

huddle

Basically penguins form a group and all 'huddle' with their backs to the prevailing wind. There is constant rotation of the penguins from the exposed to the more sheltered side.

 

brood patch

A loose fold of skin to hold the egg or chick

flipper A penguin's wing
